The questions below serve as a tool for you to choose the right starting level for your child. Please begin at the top and read through each question. As soon as you answer ‘NO’ to a question, you will have found your child’s correct starting level.

Beginner 1

Can your child go underwater, fully submerged with open eyes and blow bubbles for 3 full seconds?
Can your child kick with a kickboard (using straight legs) holding the instructors hands for 10 full seconds?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Beginner 1. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions
Beginner 2

Can your child get to their back and float on their back and tummyunassisted for 5 full seconds?
Can your child swim underwater? Can they swim with a kickboard in deep water?
Can your child jump into 3.5 feet of water on their own, being 'caught' by an instructor?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Beginner 2. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.

Intermediate 1

Can your child side-kick with their face fully out of the water? Can they do free-style arms?
Can your child stream-line kick (no arm stroking) on their stomach and back for 12.5 yards?
Can your child (unassisted)jump into 3.5 feet of water, enter into a streamline, get back to the wall and climb out?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Intermediate 1 . If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.

Intermediate 2

Can your child flip under the water?
Can your child do the Freestyle stroke for 12.5 yards, relaxed and with even rhythm?
Can your child do the Backstroke for 12.5 yards, relaxed and with even rhythm?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Intermediate 2 . If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.

Advanced 1

Can your child swim VERY CLEAN freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards?
Can your child swim 25 yards of breaststroke and butterfly kicking?
Can your child side-kick for 25 yards?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Advanced 1 . If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.

Advanced 2

Can your child swim 25 yards of LEGAL Freestyle and Backstroke? (50 yards for children 9 and up)
Can your child swim 25 yards of LEGAL breaststroke and butterfly? (50 yards for children 9 and up)

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Advanced 2 . If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, your child is ready for a try-out for the swim team. Call Kristen to schedule at 949-380-2550.
